An investigation of pre-schoolers’ corporeal synchroniza- tion with music

چکیده
We present new methods for studying pre-schoolers’ rhythmic and music-synchronization abilities. 46 children (2 – 4 years of age) were presented with a familiar excerpt of music, in as natural a setting as possible, and their movements recorded with an optical motion capture system and standard video camera. In order to examine the synchronization process, the music excerpt contained abrupt tempo changes produced by time-stretching the audio file. The childrens’ movements were then analysed in terms of their periodicity by using windowed autocorrelation. In addition, the synchronization of these periodic movements to the beat structure of the music, the latter obtained from a beat-finding analysis of the audio signal, was examined. Various indices of synchronization accuracy were developed. The children were found to display one of three main movement types (hopping, circling, or swaying), and periodic movements were identified in all three types. These periodic movements were at times synchronized with the music, but there was little evidence of tempo-adjustment in movement periodicities.

متن کاملCorporeality, Actions and Perceptions in Gestural Performance of Digital Music
What is the relationship between the performer’s body, the instrument, the musical actions and their perception by an audience? And how do they relate when the music is generated by abstract digital processes controlled through actions on technical control surfaces, or gestural, tangible interfaces? This article investigates these questions by examining elements and concepts from physiology, th...

متن کاملThe Subjective and Corporeal Perception of the Cinematographic Frame According to Kantian Viewpoint
The cinematographic frame is a boundary which separates the image from the external world. From an ontological viewpoint which dates back to Greek philosophy, the boundary of a thing separates it from other things, thus leading to its ontological independence from other things. But, according to this point of view, the being of things as external objects is considered to be free from the impact...
